The Hope series involves three works, all composed in markers, pen, pencils and colored pencils on paper. Each work is large in scale and uses the principle of emphasis in each. This is the first work in the series and is titled: Heroic. The inspiration for the title comes from George Carlin, where he stated, “I like it when a flower or a little tuft of grass grows through a crack in the concrete. It's so f***in' heroic.” In situations where civilians are bombed, lives are lost and communities are destroyed, the sight of a small tuft of green grass among the rubble represents a sign of hope. The destruction and decay is a solemn scene. It is purposefully composed in rich values of graphite while the grass is emphasized in vibrant greens. Heroic serves as a reminder that no matter what we do to one another, nature always takes back what is rightfully hers.
