Blur

Formula One racing, also known as "F1," is the highest class of international racing. My intention was to paint this work expressionistically, with an emphasis on speed. To convey this idea, I took it upon myself to paint the image using a blurred or distorted effect. To achieve this look, the canvas was rotated sideways so that that the foundation colors for each area could be painted at the top and allowed to drip downward. I added some expressionistic splatters for added effect, but not too much as I did not want to overwhelm the composition. With the foundation colors in place, the next step involved painting the car, complete with values and details. Once dry, the canvas was once again tilted and drips were added to details in the same manner that I did the foundation colors. The main difference was that smaller brushes were used and the drips were guided more than they were in the foundation layer. In the end, I went back to touch some areas up where the drips got out of control. Overall, the look of the painting evokes motion. Speed. So much so that the paint is blowing right off the canvas.
