Mother Gaia is the ancient Greek primordial goddess of the Earth, frequently revered as "Mother Earth" or the personification of the planet itself. This work depicts Gaia as she faces a species that is unwilling to live in harmony with her. Represented by bar codes, this species has spawned a linear system that sees the earth as a commodity to be exploited for profit. It conducts wars that perpetuate this system. Along the way, the system extracts, produces, distributes, consumes and disposes. Consequences are written off as "externalities." But the reality is that a linear system running on a planet with finite resources won't last long. Everything is connected. Gaia's face springs forward from the ether. The bar codes hit Gaia. As they do, they morph into organic lines, spreading out like roots with the kind of randomness that's indicative of nature. This affect was achieved by painting the drips outside while it rained. A coincidence, or just Gaia restoring balance?
