Gandhi Rolls in His Grave

Medium:Toys Soldiers

Size(cm):160×150×6

This image of Gandhi is composed using hundreds of toy soldiers. The soldiers, displayed over a large area on the floor, are of varying colors and poses. Upon closer inspection, the soldiers are positioned in such a way that they appear to be in conflict with one another. This work presents the duality between form and content. Gandhi once stated that, "If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children." Is it any wonder why then, that in a “culture of militarism” the political leadership’s first response is to any challenge is to consider military force? Perhaps it's worth asking if there is a connection between the rise of militarism over the past several decades and a renewed effort to promote militaristic toys and activities? With so many toys carrying the same militaristic theme, it follows that acceptance of violence and fears about security are transferred to youngsters in early development.
